Since joining Rotaract in 2017, I’ve witnessed firsthand how even the smallest actions can make a significant difference. I’ve learned that money isn’t the only currency that matters and that building valuable friendships holds more worth than riches. This, truly, is the power of relationships.

While I joined Rotaract to build myself professionally, I noticed others lamenting about their inability to meet new people even though that was their prime motivation for joining. Having served as a club membership director, club president, and public image director, I believe I have gained some insight into building meaningful relationships in Rotaract and beyond.

Genuine connections go beyond collecting contact cards. It is about building relationships with people who share your values and goals. If you want to make the most out of your Rotaract experience, check out these 7 tips that will not only help you build strong relationships with other members, but also create a positive impact in your community.

1. Know Your “Why” and “Who”:

Before diving headfirst into networking, define your purpose. Are you seeking mentors, collaborators, or simply friends? Identifying the specific types of people you want to connect with will help you target your efforts and build mutually beneficial relationships.

2. Be a Platform, Not a Parasite:

Instead of focusing solely on what you can gain, offer value. Share your expertise, skills, and willingness to help. Contribute actively to your club, participate in service projects, and become known for your positive contributions. When you offer value, the right people will naturally gravitate towards you.

3. Look Beyond Rotaract Events:

While Rotaract events are valuable, don’t limit yourself. Attend workshops, conferences, and other events related to your interests. This will expose you to like-minded individuals who share your passions.

4. Build Relationships, Not Just Contacts:

Networking events are often characterized by brief interactions and exchanges of business cards. Focus on building genuine relationships instead. Take the time to get to know people personally, engage in meaningful conversations and find common ground.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Be Vulnerable:

Sharing your personal experiences, goals, and challenges can help others connect with you more deeply. Openness fosters trust and builds lasting relationships.

6. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity:

Having a few close friends and mentors is better than building a large network of superficial connections. Invest time and effort into nurturing meaningful relationships with the people who matter most to you.

7. Be Patient:

Building genuine connections takes time and effort. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Keep showing up, being yourself, and contributing to your community. The right connections will eventually come along.

Remember: Connecting is a two-way street. Focus on building mutually beneficial relationships where everyone involved feels supported and valued. By following these tips, you can build a strong network of friends, mentors, and collaborators who will help you achieve your goals and make a positive impact on the world.
